Last week I spent some time working on a birthday surprise for my other half since I couldn’t spend time with him on his special day due to being 13,000 kilometres apart.
My goal was to create a video compiled with a bunch of people saying, “Happy Birthday!” in different languages because… when else would I have an opportunity to be surrounded by so many international and exchange students?!
The idea lingered in my head for the longest time but I didn’t have the courage to actually start it until I told my friend, Andrea. Though she was quite enthused and reassured me it was a good idea, I was still really hesitant to start because I didn’t know whether people would participate or whether I had enough time to invest into a video production on top of dealing with school, work, and volunteer commitments.
Luckily, I am surrounded by a group of genuinely nice people so most of them jumped on board as soon as I told them about it! I even got a clip of the owner of a small Sri Lankan restaurant (see if you can spot her in the video!). It was the most random ask ever, but she was excited to be a part of it.
Despite the horrible meltdowns of Windows Movie Maker and late nights of editing, it was fun filming my silly friends and I am glad to have such a supportive community!
Something that shocked me was the overwhelmingly positive response. I thought only a few people would watch it (mainly those who were recorded) but within 24 hours, it got over 125 likes on Facebook and over 250 views on YouTube. I guess the surprise wasn’t only for Kevin – others enjoyed it as well!
Below is the final product – enjoy!
Special thanks to EVERYONE who helped me create this video!! I couldn’t have done it without your generous support so thank you, thank you, thank you 🙂
